Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve rounded up the most common inquiries to help you understand more about what we offer.

What are creosote sweeping logs, and can I use them?

Creosote sweeping logs (CSLs) are specially formulated fire logs that release chemical additives when burned and are designed to help break down and loosen creosote deposits. They are widely available at hardware stores and home improvement retailers, and many homeowners use them as a convenient between-cleaning maintenance tool.

While CSLs are safe for use, and can help reduce the rate of creosote buildup and make deposits easier to remove, they are not a substitute for a professional chimney sweep – and it’s important to understand that distinction. The chemicals in a sweeping log can loosen creosote, but that loosened debris still remains in your chimney until it is physically removed by a certified professional.

What type of wood should I burn in my fireplace?

For the most efficient fireplace performance, you should burn only dry, seasoned hardwood that has been split and dried for at least six months to a year. The best options include oak, maple, ash, and cherry – dense hardwoods that produce long-lasting, hot fires with less smoke.

Avoid burning green or wet wood, which produces significantly more smoke and creosote buildup in your chimney. Never burn treated lumber, cardboard, trash, or materials with paint or chemicals, as these release toxic fumes and cause accelerated creosote deposits.

What does “chimney draft” mean?

Chimney draft refers to the upward airflow through the flue that pulls smoke and combustion gases out of the fireplace and out of your home. Good draft is created by the temperature difference between the hot air inside the flue and the cooler outside air, causing the warm air to rise and vent properly.

Poor draft (which causes smoke to enter the room) can result from a cold flue, a blockage, incorrect chimney height, or pressure imbalances in the home. A qualified chimney professional can diagnose and correct draft problems to ensure your fireplace operates safely.
